    1 on 1, American lion easy. If its a pack of Dire Wolves, the Dire Wolves. But if it's pack v.s. pack... Dire wolves still, because wolves are better with coordination and pack fighting/hunting than lions, in my opinion.

    My answer is the same as TheLazyFish's answer. But if the fight took place between 25,000-11,000 years ago, then it is possible that humans could intervene and possibly even win the fight unfairly and advantageously.

    Even 1 on 4, an American lion of that size will win the fight.  It doesn't even have to result in all 4 dire wolves being killed, all it would take is 1 or 2 to be killed and the remaining wolves will back off.

    But a pack will be too great a challenge for a lone lion.  Sure, some wolves will be killed, and all will be at least injured, but that lion is done for.  Look at a spotted hyena clan ganging up on a lone African lion as an analogue.  Or even a dhole pack against a tiger.  Either lone cat would back down if it had the chance to escape.

    A few lions will cause the wolves to back off.

    An entire pride (assuming they lived in groups) fighting will send a whole pack running, especially once the big boys show up.

    Well, technically if the wolf pack is large enough and/or if they take the lions on at night, and it's only a few lions... the lions would probably run off. I mean, we see the samething with lions today and spotted hyenas. Sometimes, spotted hyenas will outnumber the lions and scare them off their kill at night, when they have the advantage.

    And as far as my proposed "human interference" factor is concerned? What about that?

    Well, that's usually not a factor in fights. It's uncommon in the Dinosaur Forums that there interference from something else, let alone humans. I really wouldn't consider it, but that once again depends on the age and number of all species. If it's a ten year old human kid in the middle of a pack war, I think that it wouldn't be a factor. If it's a large group of hunters, they could win. But again, this fight isn't humans V.S Dire Wolves V.S. American Lion.

    And I assume that the same applies for the environmental factors (stormy, forest fire, canyon avalanche, etc.), right?

    Or is that a little bit different?

    That's more terrain, which isn't listed in a set thing, so it can be a factor. The humans would count as an extra competitor in the fight, while it says that there are only 2 species in this fight. Sure, if it's a fight that you're writing, you can throw in a surprise kill from an unexpected creature here and there, but for debating whether one would win, it wouldn't really make sense to talk about an extra creature when referring to a specific scenario between TWO creatures, instead of one with all three. It's like when talking about Spinosaurs V.S. Tyrannosaurus, and then saying that a Triceratops would be a factor. It could be, yeah, but they're just generally disregarded because that would be a different fight altogether. If it's a stormy fight between the Spinosaurus V.S. Tyrannosaurus, it might yield a slightly different (and cooler) outcome, but it's still the overall same fight. It's just about how well suited they are to the specific terrain. Throwing in another competitor, it messes up the whole fight.

    Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that. :)

    No problem, but do take that with a grain of salt. It's just my personal opinion, as with most things I say. If you ever write your own fight, feel free to throw in whatever extra stuff you feel should be in, like how GMK ended up including Baragon even though he wasn't in the title.

    @TheLazyFish,

    Why would you think spotted hyenas have an advantage at night?  Both them and African lions have excellnt night vision.

    @MinecraftDinoKaiju, why would people want to interfere in this confrontation?  Just wait for the fight to be over, and go kill the loser?

    Sorry, I thought lions didn't have great night vision. DAMN YOU MEMORY!!!!!!!! But, still. If that's the case, then night doesn't matter, and so even in daylight a pack of hyenas could scare off a few lions from a kill. So I think Dire Wolves could probably do the same to American Lions.
